Did you know that Cumbalum and the areas around Ballina Heights is one of the richest areas for birds with more than 140 different bird species! The entrance to the estate is a beautiful wetlands that could be zoned as a protected environment because of its diverse plants and wildlife. This area could be celebrated by turning it into a significant hub, encircling the sports field with a pathway to bring together the whole community to enjoy and explore outdoor activities in and around the fauna and flora of the wetlands in a harmonious way..

Key members of the CRA with significant environmental qualifications, background and experience have conceived a project called the 'Cumbalum Community Circle' and many of us would like to see this project hatching out of its golden egg.

Please read on to find out more about how to bring this exciting project to life - a project that will enrich the Cumbalum area and all of Ballina! We welcome your feedback and comments to help capture the wider community views...

The Cumbalum Residents Association has been engaging with Ballina Shire Council and a local landowner to enhance accessibility to the area around the Cumbalum Sporting Complex and adjacent wetlands. We are now seeking your feedback and comments to ensure we are aware of your views.

The aims of the project are to improve social connectivity through an inclusive recreational pathway, to showcase and provide access to the unique wetlands and to attract visitors to the area who will support local businesses in the imminent Cumbalum Shopping Village.

The conceptual plan involves a 700m pathway known as the Cumbalum Community Circle which will encircle the sports fields and provide viewing over the wetlands.

It is proposed that two wetland observatories be placed along the pathway so that pedestrians can observe and enjoy the wetlands with minimal disturbance to the wildlife. There have been over 140 species of birds recorded in the wetlands to date, including rare and unusual birds that only nest in specific areas.

In addition to this wetlands pathway, we are proposing an enclosed off-leash dog park, a display of artworks and interpretive signage, as well as an upgrade of the existing playground equipment with further recreational facilities to be added.

Have your chance to influence the Plan. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

A comprehensive Draft Plan of Management has been developed with detailed information, including environmental assessment and management. Please email: Cumbalumresidentsassocation@gmail.com to obtain a copy.
